Danton’s Death Script

Blackout. We start to hear the sound of the peasants rioting. A spot light appears on Buchner/ Danton whom is wearing a court wig. Two guards appear carrying prison bars and hold them in front of Buchner/Danton .The spot light appears on Buchner/Danton

BUCHNER:  NO ….NO… What …What is this….(feeling his head to realise he is now Danton, he comes to his knees on his bed grasps the bars to embrace the lines of Danton)

DANTON:  Where self-defence ends murder begins. I see no necessity for going on with these killings.

Spotlight also appears on Robespierre.

ROBESPIERRE: The social revolution is not yet accomplished. To carry out a revolution by halves is to dig your own grave. The society of the privileged is not yet dead.

DANTON: You are a fraud!

ROBESPIERRE: My conscience is clear.

DANTON: (addressing the audience in a sarcastic manner) Conscience is a mirror before which a monkey pinches itself. You aim to turn the guillotine into a washtub for people’s stained linen – now do you have the right to do so?

ROBESPIERRE:  You deny the existence of virtue?

DANTON:  and you of vice!

ROBESPIERRE:  Danton, there are periods when vice is high treason.

Spotlight fades off of Robespierre, are attention is turned to Danton/Buchner.

DANTON:  For God’s sake don’t proscribe it. We mustn’t strike the innocent along with the guilty. (In rage shaking the bars) WE MUSTN’T STRIKE THE INNOCENT ALONG WITH THE GUILTY!

The crowds’ rioting fades. The Guards take the bars away and help Danton/Buchner into a right- angled position at the end of the bed. The spotlight fades off Danton/Buchner as a reconstruction of his execution is projected on the screen. At the end of the projection the normal lighting appears around Buchner, without his wig, and appears dazed and confused as to why he is in the execution position at the end of his bed.
