Costume

One of the main considerations for our production is costume. Buchner’s time of life was in the 1800’s and as the main sections of our production are based on his life, our costume needed to reflect this time period. However, as Buchner starts to fade into his ‘dream sequences’ (Danton’s Death, Leonce and Lena and Woyzeck) we find ourselves playing up to four or more characters. With little time to costume change and only a minimal amount of actors in our company, we decided on using one relevant piece of clothing to change between characters. This should give clarity to the audience and help them gain an understanding as to who we are in our production. Below I have drawn some rough designs to give you an insight into our costume ideas. Please click on the costume designs to see them in full.

The inspiration for Sylvia’s costume came from a picture we discovered through our research process.

The next design is for laura :

The inspiration for Laura’s costume comesfrom the stereotypical view of a carnival announcer. The only adaption that we made to the costume, was the costume within the time period.

The next costume is for Sam.

As Sam was the only female, mainly acting female characters. I decided to dress Sam in a very feminin dress.

The next costume was for Naomi.

Most of Naomi’s characters were military based, therefore I decided that her main costume would be around a military uniform but still keeping within the 1800’s time period.

These costume designs were our basic outline to portray our character’s. We may not have been able to stick exactly to the designs but most of the ideas were kept. please see the media page for examples.
